The Fortress retains the traditional style of an 18th century royal residence, whilst offering modern luxuries conveniences to ensure a comfortable stay.

Each of the bedrooms has a private bathroom, and the two tents also have unique ensuite facilities. The accommodation is air cooled throughout in the traditional manner using natural evaporative coolers, and beds are fitted with mosquito nets. With no more than two rooms in any one building, you are ensured peace and privacy.

A buffet breakfast is served on the ramparts of the fort, with a spectacular view over the Narmada River. Tea comes from an exclusive tea garden in Darjeeling, and coffee from Coorg is especially roasted for The Fortress. Dinner can be enjoyed outside under the grand neem trees on one of the terraces overlooking the river, or in the Chamber of Winds. Much of the food is organically grown on The Fortress´s nearby farm. After dinner, relax on the battlements, under a canopy of stars.

About Your Hosts

Your host Prince Shivaji Rao Holkar, son of the last Maharajah of Indore, is a noted chef and author of a book of recipes from the Maharajah´s palaces. The Prince will ensure your stay is one spent in an oasis of calm and repose.

Out and About

The Fortress is an excellent base for local excursions:
Explore the fort and its many temples; walk down to the riverside and take a boat trip to Baneshwar River Temple.
Experience a moon-lit picnic on a boat serenaded by floating musicians, or a concert of classical Indian dance and music. Swim in the waterfalls, go bird watching, sketch or paint.
Visit around August for the monsoon when the landscape is awash in shades of green and the skies alive with the dance of sun and cloud.
Visit Mandu, an abandoned 15th century Islamic walled city, in the jungles of the Malwa plateau. Or head to Omkareshwar to experience traditional Hindu India or a boat trip down the sacred Narmada River.
